New Garmins, but no handhelds

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping this doesn't mean that we won't see any new Garmin handhelds at CES. There weren't any in their announcements yesterday. I'm really going to be surprised if we don't get some new models for this spring and summer.

Garmin nuvi 680

Garmin StreetPilot c580

Garmin nuvi 370 / 670

Garmin zumo 450

Garmin Astro 220

What I wish they'd come out with would be like the new astro system, but instead of the dog unit being roving and transmitting position, have it stationary and broadcasting pseudorange and carrier phase info so the handheld unit could do kinematic post processing. Imagine having submeter accuracy while geocaching!

One good bit of information though - they indicate the astro has a 3-axis compass, so we can hope that this will carry over to future Garmin handhelds.

Check out the home page of GPS Tracklog.

It turns out that the Garmin Astro 220 Dog Tracker comes with a triaxial compass. An astute reader on Geocaching.com's GPS message board pointed this out. A long time feature of some Magellan handhelds. it's nice to see Garmin integrating this feature.

The benefit of a triaxial compass is that you don't have to hold it level. It's still going to point the right direction.

Maybe this feature will be found on the next round of Garmin handhelds. Hopefully more announcements will be coming at CES next week. I just haven't figured out what they would call it...the 60CS 3x ? The 60 Tri-X? I certainly hope Garmin's marketing people are better at naming products than I am!
