Oregon 450 - Caches not listed when GPS is not plugged into computer

Have downloaded caches to f/Garmin/GPX from a pocket query. With the GPS plugged into the computer they appear. When the GPS is NOT plugged into the computer, they do not appear on the GPS. I have scrolled through the list (caches previously downloaded) and did a search. Not there. Also checked the settings to see if there's something preventing them from appearing. No luck. Thought perhaps it was a space issue but there is still 812 mb available for use. Total space used in the GPX directory is 2.9 mb, approx 200 caches. Any suggestions?

It's a common problem to all Garmin GPS units where the GPS fails to properly index the contents of the GPX file. You'll need to delete the GPX files from your GPS, turn it on (not plugged in), turn it off, plug it back in and re-load the GPX files. Turn the GPS back on and it should work.

This issue happens enough that it's worth storing your data on an SD card rather than on the GPS itself. That way, if this happens to you while you're out in the field, all you have to do is remove the SD card, boot up the GPS, re-install the SD card and boot up the GPS again.

Are the caches a significant distance from your current location? If they're all more than 50 miles away (somebody please confirm the distance, I can never remember), the unit won't show them in the list even though they're stored in the unit. Once you're in the area where the caches are located, they'll show up in the list

Thanks guys. The matter is resolved .... for now. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. I deleted all the caches, unplugged GPS, plugged back in and downloaded the pocket query. Will try putting them on the SDcard later today.

Note, the original pocket query was downloaded Friday night from home. Everything went well. It wasn't until yesterday (Saturday) when I was in the area of the caches that I realized I couldn't see them. How frustrating! Nothing like going caching without the use of the GPS ... sigh.

I never had any issues with the Dakota 20. Have now been using the Oregon 450 for 3 months. It is one issue after another. Not happy with it at all. Will post a separate topic for another problem with it.

Mineral2, Thank you for this advice. I was all set for some out-of-town caching this weekend. Fired up the old Oregon 450 and No Geocaches on it. Laptop left at home. Luckily, I had seen this last week and had put the geocache file on the card. It only took a few minutes and I was up and running. You saved the day.

Took your advice and loaded the caches on the SD card. Thought it had resolved the matter. Unfortunately not or perhaps it's a separate issue.

Most of the caches appear on the card but NOT all. I checked the settings on the pocket query but this is not the case. The only restriction is to not include ones previously found.

Did you delete them from the GPS after you installed them on the card?
