I have a friend who is on a land trust coservatory group that found it and were curious about the significance of it on the land. Thanks again. Lefty Quote Link to comment
+Shorelander
WOW! That's it! That's the disk! I found one of those myself, but yours is in much better condition! Are you in Massachusetts, perchance? PS: That's not the same disk as the Type I, I think. The Type I disk is from Mobile, according to the pictures. Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
Shorelander - You're right, it isn't the same type. It's representative of a whole family of types, with different localities, I guess. Quote Link to comment
+lefty2448
Its in Maine, but we cant find it on any pages still. It doesnt have the triangle or numbers like most of the others we found listed. Quote Link to comment
+BuckBrooke
A lot of disks will just have a central dot or point. I'll add it as a new type, and relabel the other US Engineer Dept. disks to be clearer. Quote Link to comment
+Shorelander
Looking at the National Archives web site, my guess is that Maine was encompassed by the Boston District, and so that was the Boston disk. +BuckBrooke
Ok, ya'll in those areas. You have a lot of work to do. Quote Link to comment
+Klemmer
I haven't bothered with those USACE ones out here, since they are 95% not in the NGS database. But if BuckBrooke wants them for the marker agency collection, I think I know where there are some Los Angles District ones out here. Your wish is my command. Maybe after work today. I was looking for somewhere to go hiking 2 - 3 miles anyway...... Quote Link to comment
+BuckBrooke
Klemner, don't feel like you have to schlep to add for the list; I should have added a :-) after that statement. Quote Link to comment
Wintertime
What is the "U.S. Engineer Department," anyway? I thought maybe it was the precursor of the Army Corps of Engineers, but according to their website, the latter was created in 1779, and I think we can safely say that this disk wasn't monumented before that...There are a couple of references to an Engineer Department on the ACE's history page, but it's never explained. +Klemmer
Buckbrooke: Of course I don't HAVE to, I WANTED to! Had a very nice 4 mile walk after work, gorgeous 70-ish weather, but no joy on the older ACE markers. The USACE markers at the dam dam (Carbon Canyon Dam, in Brea, CA) were too new. I haven't compared them exactly yet, but I'm fairly sure they are newer types, that are probably already on your list. If not. will advise. Thanks for the good excuse! Quote Link to comment
